Crispy Sesame Tofu pieces with Gochujang Dipping Sauce (Vegan Recipe)

This vegan tofu recipe will be a great addition to your Bento box. What are these? They are lunch boxes with compartments separating food courses, sauces and sides. The great thing about them is you can have a bit of everything. However, this recipe alone will be giving you so many different flavours already! Sesames rich nutty taste combined with the salty, spicy, sweetness Gochujang offers is just an amazing mix.

Crispy Sesame Tofu pieces with Gochujang Dipping Sauce (Vegan Recipe)

    For the Sesame Crusted Tofu:
  • 500g firm tofu
  • 100g gluten free flour (or plain flour)
  • 100g chickpea (gram) flour
  • 170ml water
  • 1 tsp gochujang
  • pinch of bicarbonate of soda
  • pinch of salt & pepper
  • 1 packet nori sheets
  • 150g white sesame seeds
  • olive oil, for frying
  • For the Gochujang Dipping Sauce:
  • 60ml tamari
  • 1 tsp maple syrup
  • 1 heaped tsp gochujang


  1. Slice tofu into rectangles approx 1cm thick.
  2. Slice nori sheets to a similar size of rectangle and sandwich this between 2 pieces of tofu.
  3. Put the gluten free / plain flour in 1 bowl.
  4. In another bowl, add the chickpea flour, water, gochujang, bicarbonate of soda and salt & pepper, and whisk together to form a batter.
  5. In a third bowl, add the white sesame seeds.
  6. Take each ‘tofu sandwich’ and dip it in the flour covering all sides, then dip in the chickpea gochujang batter to coat all sides, and finally dip in the sesame seeds so that they stick to each side.
  7. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat, and fry off each tofu piece, ensuring you turn to cook all sides until golden brown.
  8. Meanwhile, mix together the ingredients for the dipping sauce.
  9. When the tofu pieces are ready, slice in half, dip into the sauce, and enjoy!
