and the source for my inspiration
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a variety of people that openly acknowledge the benefits of eating natural, plant-based cuisine and want to make a change in the way they eat, the way they live, and the way they feel. Unfortunately, all of them had another thing in common – they didn’t know where to start.
Six years ago, my lifelong passion for food took me on an unexpected adventure. I met someone who shared my vision and we decided to embark on a journey in the health travel industry. I started to run retreats and, thanks to my love for food and fresh ingredients, it was only natural that I did all the cooking. All the food was to be plant-based and gluten-free. My goal was to create dishes that tasted familiar, were comforting during a rough week, and could be recreated anywhere in the world.
Before entering the wellness industry, I was diagnosed with severe Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis and was told that the likelihood of me ever having children was close to zero. The options offered to me included IVF, the contraceptive pill, or medication with some not-so-nice side effects. I’d previously been working 12 to 14 hour days in the food and beverage industry and had fallen victim to a vicious cycle of very unhealthy living. The late nights, the workload and unhealthy lifestyle definitely took its toll.
It was this devastating diagnosis that proved to be a truly pivotal point in my life. The food I cooked at the Retreats trickled into my own life. Including trial and error with testing out nutrition and supplements to ease my condition. Including more plants into my diet made me feel alot better! Seven months after starting in the wellness industry I discovered that I was pregnant. NOW Can I say with 100 %certainty that changing my eating habits contributed to me getting pregnant? No but what I can say for sure is that by including a much greater variety of plant foods I felt heaps better. And so did the clients that I was cooking for.
What had started as an experiment quickly became my passion and career. The retreats became the foundation of both my career and loving family.
My daughter was and continues to be a huge part of my journey. She’s part of the new generation that will hopefully recognise the importance of true self-care and healthy choices. I spend allot of time educating her about food, where to find it, and how to prepare it. She frequents food markets, picks out her own produce and cooks with me in the kitchen.
Over the years, my knowledge about and passion for plant-based diets has continued to grow and I am constantly on the hunt for delicious solutions to everything. Many of my clients have specific health issues and or new found intolerances.
I hope that people will be inspired to shop at their local farmers market, eat seasonally, incorporate more plants into their diets and realise how easy that can be. I am an advocate of the “No waste aspect” and am passionate about using all of the plants root, tops and all.
As for the food itself and what category it belongs to,I don't want people to feel that they have to belong or label themselves as anything to enjoy my food. I prefer the food to speak for itself.
